The John Bentley School

An Outstanding Centre For Learning

We have just completed our first year of the new AQA GCSE specification. The English department have enjoyed selecting new literature texts and creating exciting new schemes of learning that meet the rigorous demands of this new specification. We have also restructured our yr7-9 programme of study to best prepare all of our learners for the demands of GCSE Literature and Language. This includes an introduction to the new 9-1 grading system.

We are really interested in what genre of texts students enjoy reading, as well as the themes that capture their imagination. The current texts that we study at GCSE are ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ by R.L. Stevenson, ‘Blood Brothers’ by Willie Russell, ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J.B. Priestley, Power & Conflict Poetry’ and ‘The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.’ One of the highlights of the academic year is taking students to the local theatres to watch performances of these dramas.

In English Language we explore a vast range of fiction and non-fiction genres such as: speeches, articles, essays, short stories, novel passages and biographies. This really allows the students to examine the writer’s craft, and allow them to express themselves more profoundly and effectively when forming their creative responses.
